Clapton calls Wyman’s bass lines “fantastic, unique. He modeled his work on that of Donald “Duck” Dunn of Booker T and the MGs. There is, however, some nice testimony about his unfussy, but highly effective, approach to the bass from informed observers like Eric Clapton and the producer Glyn Johns. Photograph: Peter Brooker/ Rex Features/Five TV In terms of his instrument, there’s a brief allusion to how Wyman wound up inadvertently creating the world’s first fretless bass, an important enough innovation to have merited more discussion.īill Wyman and Mandy Smith in 1989. Wyman also tends to stand stick-stiff on-stage, holding his bass like a soldier with his weapon at rest. Newspaper clippings amplify his reputation as “stone face” based on his affect, which is so deadpan, it could make a corpse look like the life of the party. Perhaps that set-up is meant to underscore the enigmatic nature of his character, something the film provides ample evidence of. The film positions this fact as a central part of Wyman’s character and even features many scenes of him in his archive where, puzzlingly, he’s shot from behind and in voiceover rather than while speaking directly to the camera. He has filmed, saved or collected more about the band than anyone else on Earth. There’s real reason to have expected more fresh material given Wyman’s well-known role as the Stones’ most dedicated, and informed, archivist. Other than one extraordinary scene at the movie’s end, and a few choice bits along the way, The Quiet One skims the surface of the band’s history, alighting mainly on the dramatic highlights – the early riots the band inspired, their contrary image in the press, the 60s drug bust, Altamont. But, in return, it would have been nice if he got meatier, or rarer, material from Wyman regarding what the film’s potential audience cares about most – the story of the Stones. Such oversights demonstrate the depth of the director’s deference to his subject. There’s no mention that, in 1993 – the same year Wyman divorced Smith – his 30-year-old son Stephen married Smith’s mother, who was then 46. The film is even more circumspect about the most improbable aspect of this story. “Everyone accepted her as an adult without question.” In Wyman’s 1991 autobiography, A Stone Alone, he was more forthcoming. I felt she had to go out and see life for a bit.” Of the marriage – which resulted in a separation three years later, and a divorce two years after that – he says, “I was really stupid to ever think it could possibly work. It wasn’t lust, which people were seeing it as.” Notably, he does not talk about how old she was when they first had sex. Fleetingly, Wyman defends his relationship with Smith by saying “it was from the heart. Like the study led by Professor Coupland, it's full of intriguing concepts and potential, but by the end much of that promise goes unfulfilled - with the film as a whole nearly sliding off the rails in the process. In fact, the documentary, which is being shown as part of this year’s Tribeca film festival, does allude to part of the controversy. The latest horror offering from the revitalized Hammer Film Productions ( Let Me In, The Woman in Black), The Quiet Ones is a pastiche of old-fashioned spooky movie tropes and techniques, blended with more currently popular horror stylistic flourishes. However, as the study pushes Jane closer to the brink of insanity - causing even more violently strange phenomena to occur around her - Brian starts to wonder if there are, in fact, supernatural forces at work here - and whether or not Coupland's intentions truly are as honorable as he claims they are. When the funding for Coupland's "experiment" to prove this gets cut, he leads his team of student researchers - Brian included - to a secluded house in the countryside, where they may continue their work. GFI Software is a developer of IT solutions founded in 1992. Anyone who wakes him up immediately receives a beating. He’s court-ordered to be medicated because of violence however taking his medication seemed to result in him being more violent, not less at least once during this book. He’s all of five foot nothing but despite this, everyone is afraid of him. He comes with his own entourage and also a bodyguard, Andrew. For mysterious reasons and injury, he’s left them behind and joined the Palmetto Foxes. This year they will have not only Neil but also Kevin Day, who used to play with the best team in their league. The team is woeful, last in their division but with the potential to be good if they could actually put it together on the court. They are split into factions and are constantly warring with each other, often punching on in games. Playing in a tiny Arizona town, Neil is recruited by Palmetto State University to their team. There are multiple levels, from professional to college down to small school or local leagues. Despite only being invented about thirty years ago (the people that invented it are still alive) it has a popularity that rivals the NFL and NBA. He plays some sort of made up sport known as Exy, which appears to be mostly like lacrosse but with the body checks of ice hockey. He was on the run with his mother but she’s dead now so it’s just him. The book revolves around Neil Josten, who has been on the run from his violent father for eight years. The first book is free, I needed something to read on my phone while I was at an appointment, so I thought why not. There were a lot of posts tagged with this series and the characters mixed in so I thought they might be similar. I found it scrolling instagram posts about Baz & Simon from Carry On and Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell. This is one of the weirdest books I’ve read in a long time. Maybe he’s finally found someone and something worth fighting for. Neil has survived the last eight years by running. The team is high profile and he doesn’t need sports crews broadcasting pictures of his face around the nation. Signing a contract with the PSU Foxes is the last thing a guy like Neil should do. He’s short, he’s fast, he’s got a ton of potential-and he’s the runaway son of the murderous crime lord known as The Butcher. Neil Josten is the newest addition to the Palmetto State University Exy team. However, none of them found the rest of the terms. Here’s a couple of real world scenarios for you from a technical document we were working with, the bolded terms being the ones you’d need to search for. For that you’ll need to follow a different set of practices. However, searching for phrases, especially technical phrases, won’t work really well with this list of dictionaries. You might have luck searching the Oxford English Dictionary, Merriam-Webster, or any other host of online dictionaries for single word terms. From absolute definitions down to definitions you will have to build out yourself (following standards set forth by international committees). Our methodology works its way down from the most authoritative sources to the least authoritative sources. Where do we find the definitions, what methods do we use to look for them? The Unified Compliance team is in that predicament quite often. So your first step in how to write a definition is to see if there’s a definition readily available that you can leverage (and cite so you aren’t plagiarizing). But your organization doesn’t have a definition for that term that you can draw from. Here’s the scenario, you are writing whatever document it is and you’ve determined that you want to create a definition in your document. An incredibly powerful story that will leave a lasting impression. The author's writing is as tight as a hangman's noose, the pacing and tension as taut as the rope.Īnimosity is one of those books that no matter your preferred genre, should definitely be read. Newman offers up the ultimate morality tale, a sleek, powerful monster of a story, that puts the reader in the shoes of Andrew Holland, an innocent victim of that mindless spawn of public opinion gone rabid.mob justice, cranking up the suspense to a fever pitch as Holland's life becomes a living Hell, pushing him to the limits of his endurance and sanity, to the breaking point where his humanity takes a backseat, and the beast within is unchained, as survival instincts take over. And only blood will appease the mindless beast once unleashed. Fueled by an irresponsible media, for whom shock value means more than fact, the mob builds, as whispers become a roar. Where a rumor, a flat out lie, can take on a life of it's own, usually from the broken body of the truth, left to rot, forgotten in the mad rush to judgement, which builds from a trickle to a torrent without thought. In a world where public opinion, born of baser impulses, rules. This is one of the most powerful horror novels I have read in my life. Rather than bloodthirsty vampires or brain-eating zombies beating at the door, they are our own friends, our families, our peers…and what in any horror writer’s twisted imagination could be more terrifying? It is a retelling of the “The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street” for the modern age, a morality-play-meets-horror-story in which the monsters wear all-too-familiar faces. They vandalize his home, trash his vehicle.Īnd just when he thinks things can’t possibly get any worse, another child’s body is found.Īndy is no longer sure if he will survive this ordeal with his sanity intact…assuming he does survive.Īnimosity is a disturbing look into how otherwise good people can allow themselves to be misled by gossip, rumors, and a mob mentality. His phone rings, and when he answers muffled voices curse him, spitting vile accusations. His neighbors soon take their disdain to a frightening new level. Ben Souther, with whom Andy once enjoyed cold beers and baseball banter on warm summer nights, offers the writer advice which now hints of something more unsettling than the sly wisdom normally found in his quotes-for-every-occasion: “Let us not make imaginary evils when we have so many real ones to encounter”. His neighbors’ derision is subtle at first – a nasty look, a friendly wave that is not reciprocated. Though the authorities clear him of any wrongdoing, as weeks pass with no arrest the local media insinuates connections between the gruesome subject matter of Andy's novels and his tragic discovery. Everything changes, however, the day Andy discovers the body of a murdered child just several hundred yards from his front door.Īlmost instantly, his neighbors start to turn on him. The author is the closest thing to a celebrity most of Poinsettia Lane’s residents will ever meet. His neighbors seem proud to know him (although none of them would admit to reading “that kind of stuff”). To keep from getting too depressed about that, Andy has thrown himself into his writing more vigorously than ever, when he’s not spending as much time with his daughter, Samantha, as joint custody allows. Andy’s wife recently left him for another man. Animosity is the story of Andrew Holland, a bestselling horror writer whose life begins to mirror the fictional nightmares of his novels after he finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Although the state legislature had considered payment-processor remittance legislation in prior years, the 2017 report did not include such a proposal. As noted in the COST letter, it’s unclear whether this represents an actual increase in revenue or merely a timing shift.Ĭonnecticut’s 2017 tax gap report proposed a number of ways to close the shortfall, including targeted audits, revoking sales tax permits, and requiring filing of 1099-Ks with the DRS at the same time as the forms are filed with the IRS. The Fiscal Note for SB877 estimates that the payment-processor remittance provision would yield $20M of revenue in each of FY 20, though the methodology behind that estimate is not provided. The annual sales and use tax gap in Connecticut, according to a 2017 DRS report, was $298.8M ($70M of which is expected to be closed through the Wayfair decision and subsequent economic nexus legislation). The goal of accelerated reporting and remittance is to reduce the “tax gap” – the difference between the expected tax revenue and the actual revenue collected. Who constitutes an “electronic payment processing company” and when is the sales transaction deemed to occur for purposes of the 24-hour remittance period? What reporting information, if any, will pass through to the DRS with the remittance? What happens in the event of a return or refund? How do taxpayers reconcile the remittances on their monthly returns, especially when multiple payment processors are involved? How are overpayments handled? What if the payment processor retains the tax amount but never remits it? What are the penalties and other associated enforcement mechanisms for noncompliance? In a May 22 letter to the Connecticut General Assembly, COST highlighted these and other issues. The former Connecticut Department of Revenue Services Commissioner, Kevin Sullivan, testified in 2016 that daily remittance was “a solution in search of a problem, or at least it’s the wrong solution,” which would “add significant costs to credit processors, retailers, and ultimately consumers.”īeyond the issue of technological capabilities and the logistics involved in implementing an approved solution, there are numerous concerns left unaddressed in Connecticut’s legislative language. Connecticut also considered and rejected daily remittance in past years. Massachusetts eventually abandoned the proposal. The State Tax Research Institute, an affiliate of the Council on State Taxation, studied the Massachusetts proposal and found that “implementing a daily sales tax collection system would cost businesses about $1.2 billion in one-time, non-recurring costs and an additional $28 million in annual recurring costs” (full report available here). Assuming the provision passes as-is, it’s unclear how taxpayers would be able to comply with the mandate by July 1.įrom a technology standpoint, sales tax information typically is not passed through to a payment processor, so systems would first need to be upgraded and tested. In 2017, Massachusetts considered a similar policy (HB3800). The bill does not provide a de minimis threshold for the requirements it would presumably apply to all sellers regardless of business size or sector. (b) The commissioner may issue a request for proposals to evaluate companies that are eligible to provide automated sales tax collection and remittance and shall publish annually a list of such companies that are approved by the commissioner. (a) The Commissioner of Revenue Services shall require taxpayers required to collect the tax under chapter 219 of the general statutes to enter into an agreement with an electronic payment processing company to provide automated sales tax collection and remittance, whereby such company (1) segregates an amount equal to the sales tax, if any, for each sales transaction payment processed by such company, and (2) remits such amount automatically to the Department of Revenue Services within twenty-four hours after such sales transaction. The bill would be effective from July 1, 2019, and provides as follows: On May 20, the latest version of Connecticut’s budget bill ( SB877) was released, which includes a provision calling for remittance of sales tax by payment processors within 24 hours of a transaction. In the mythology of the series, Earth is one of countless worlds in the multiverse, created from the primordial Storytime by the dreaming of a being known as Lux, the First Dreamer. There is no combat or stealth gameplay in Dreamfall Chapters. The on-screen interface is hidden by default to improve the immersion. Dialogue with NPCs and dialogue puzzles comprise about half of the gameplay time. The gameplay focus is on the exploration of the environments and the story and on solving puzzles. While the game supports game controllers, it was optimized for the PC. Interactive characters and objects are highlighted on the screen, allowing the player to interact with them using the mouse and context menus.
